Learning to tell our stories: Irregular Preterite Verbs

Introduction

Now it is time to put our knowledge into practice.  In lesson five we will both read and write stories in the past tense.

In this lesson you will

1. Read a story that uses past tense verbs and answer comprehension questions to check for understanding.

2. Rewrite the story using your own ideas to change key elements.

3. Read your story outloud and record it as a video on Flipgrid.  This video will be shared with the class

4. Watch the videos of 3 classmates.  Respond (in Spanish) with what you liked about their story and what you would have changed.

1. Reading Practice

Read the story of Caperucita Roja.

1. Read/ listen to the story by clicking here.

2. Answer the following comprehension questions to check for understanding:

  • ¿A dónde iba Caperucita Roja?

  • ¿Qué llevaba en la canasta?

  • ¿Con quién habló en el bosque?

  • ¿Qué pasó cuando llegó a la casa de su abuela?

  • ¿Cómo terminó la historia?

3. Submit your answers to the drop box located on the work submission page. You will be given one point for each correct answer.

2. Speaking and Listening Practice

Now it is your turn to be the story teller.

1. After reading the story above, rewrite the story of Caperucita Roja in your own words.  You should not copy any of the text directly, but summarize the story in a way you would tell it.  You should change at least two major details of the story, and should create a new surprise ending. Be sure to check each verb to ensure it is in the past tense, and that you have chosen the correct form of the verb (preterite or imperfect).  Please submit this to the drop box.  The drop box is located on the work submission tab. This will be graded using our writing rubric.  Click here to see the rubric.

2. Record a video of yourself reading your story and post it on Flipgrid. Use your best accent and speak at a rate your classmates can understand. Click here to access the Flipgrid page.

To record a video in flipgrid:

- Create your account using a gmail address

- Read the directions for the video submission

- Click the green "+"  to open the video window.

- Press record to start and stop your recording.

- Take a selfie to show on the site to identify your video.

3. When you finish, watch the videos of 3 of your classmates.  You should comment on each video by saying what you liked about their version of the story, and what you would have changed.  ¡Cuidado!  Be sure to be polite in your responses.  Critiques should only be made about details from the story or grammatical errors.

  • Response saying what you liked about three videos (1 point each)

  • Response/ Critique of what you would have changed or done differently (1 point each)

  • Total: 6 points.
