Learning to tell our stories: Comparing Preterite and Imperfect Verbs

Introduction

 Now that we have learned how to conjugate both past tense forms, it is time to learn when to use each one.  In lesson four we will learn the rules for using preterite and imperfect verbs, and we will put those skills into practice!

 

In this lesson you will :

1. Watch a video to learn the rules for using preterite and imperfect verbs.

2. Interview a partner with questions using both verb tenses in Google Chat.

Introduction:

In this conference, we will log into Google Meet.  Our goal is to learn a little bit about the childhood of each of our classmates.  We will do this by asking questions in Spanish to interview each other.

Task: 

1. We will start with a 5-10 minute review of the video.  This is a chance to check your understanding and ask clarifying questions.

2. Then we will begin the interview.  You will be expected to ask at least 5 questions (provided below), and to answer at least 5 questions. 

3. You will be graded as follows:

  • Participation in the activity by asking and answering 5 questions: 4% of grade

  • Assessment: You will be given a speaking grade based on the speaking rubric.  This is 15% of your overall grade. To view that rubric click here.

Social Interaction Guidelines

1. Do your best to take turns speaking.  Don't worry, if you have not had enough chances to answer questions, I will direct some questions to you.

2. Please be polite.

3. Plan to arrive the Google Meet site early in case of technical issues.

4. Speak in Spanish ONLY.  Use of English will result in loss of points on the rubric.

Summary: 

In Lesson 4 you learned how to choose between preterite and imperfect verbs.  You practiced this new skill in a real time interview with your classmates and instructor.  You were able to apply what you have been learning about past tense verbs to ask for and give information.  In Lesson 5 you will read a version of Little Red Riding Hood, and then retell the story with your own unique twist.
